Director of Analytics & Engineering

SUMMARY: 

The Director of Analytics & Engineering will lead a team of analysts and engineers to develop and maintain Avel’s enterprise business intelligence platform and strategy. This role involves designing, architecting, developing, and testing enterprise BI applications, with a preference for MS Fabric and PowerBI experience. The Director will drive business intelligence strategy, partnering cross-functionally with business line, technical, operational, and executive leaders. This is a hands-on position, leveraging technical and coding expertise to support ETL and data modeling processes, write code and calculations to develop reports, and analyze large data sets for insights. The Director will serve as Avel’s thought-leader and expert in business intelligence, and lead, train, and develop the team. The Director will become a subject matter expert in key organizational data points driving decision-making and efficiencies 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Develops and maintains Avel’s business intelligence strategy and roadmap, articulating a vision for the organization, driving execution of the roadmap, anticipating new application functionalities, and meeting business needs 
  • Is accountable for Avel’s data repository and lakehouse strategy, including guiding the selection of technologies, architecture, and processes. 
  • Develops and supports high-value customer reporting, managing subscriptions to balance security and accessibility, requirements.  
  • Leads the development of modern data-driven analysis, dashboards, and reports 
  • Implements and oversees project intake and delivery cycles using Agile methodologies 
  • Supervises, plans and assigns work to data analysts and engineers. Provides guidance, training and direction to staff to assist them in their professional development. 
  • Partners effectively with executive leadership, operational business owners, IT, and other stakeholders.  
  • Implements best practices around data modeling, environment design, workflows, and SDLC.  
  • Designs, models, and builds out BI reports and dashboards, including writing code, DAX calculations, and optimizes the reports for users and subscription services. 
  • Manages the Analytics lifecycle including but not limited to solution development, testing, acceptance, documentation, deployment, maintenance, periodic improvement and retirement. Communicates progress and work effectively across the business.  
  • Implements and follows change management protocols. Documents data sources, transformations, and relevant business rules, ensuring work product documentation is organized, timely, complete, validate and stored according to protocols and best practices. 
  • Assists in the development, execution and enforcement of data handling standards and data management best practices to comply with policies, SOPs and regulations. Ensures compliance with HIPAA, SOC 2 and other federal and state required data policies and best practices. 

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline required. 
  • Seven or more years of work experience in data analysis or related field required. 
  • Experience driving an enterprise business intelligence strategy 
  • Three years of demonstrated supervisory experience required.  
  • Proven experience in developing BI applications, with preferred MS PowerBI experience  
  • Advanced Excel capabilities  
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric a plus  
  • Strong technical and coding expertise to support ETL and data modeling processes 
  • Strong understanding of data architecture best practices 
  • Proficient in writing T-SQL, PostgreSQL, PySpark/Python and other programming languages.
