Registered Nurse - Clinical Informaticist

Schedule: Full Time (80 hours/2 weeks, 1.0 FTE)

SUMMARY:  

Provides leadership and works collaboratively with nursing service, clinical users and the IT team to plan, develop, test, implement, evaluate and maintain clinical applications of the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring system integrity and adherence to Avel standards. Serves as a primary clinical and technical expert resource and trainer for the EMR and documentation for clinical staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides clinical and/or technical knowledge, expertise and leadership for EMR and professional practice project teams or committees.
  2. Identifies opportunities to transition clinical documentation from paper to electronic and develops and leads actions to facilitate this process.
  3. Assures competency of clinical staff through assessment, planning, developing, facilitating, implementing and evaluating educational needs and educational programs for data entry and retrieval in the electronic system (including new system implementation, system upgrade and follow-up education) for new and existing employees, super users, faculty and students using adult learning principles and strategies.
  4. Uses various methods (i.e., unit rounds, group discussion) to seek feedback, questions and input from clinical staff and observe process flow to make recommendations for change to facilitate user efficiency and high-quality clinical documentation.
  5. Collaborates with clinical users and IT to recognize, analyze, and resolve issues (troubleshoot) determining whether the issue is a process, system or individual issue ensuring system integrity and clinical user needs are met.
  6. Develops, supports, and maintains regular communication to and from clinical staff regarding EMR and professional practice issues using a wide variety of tools.
  7. Conducts and coordinates chart audits ensuring the clinical system and documentation are compliant with accreditation bodies, federal and state regulations and takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies in a timely manner.
  8. Participates in research related to the clinical information system and professional practice.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate from a CCNE or NLN accredited nursing program is strongly preferred. Graduate from an approved nursing program is acceptable.
  • Two to three years of clinical patient care experience is required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of South Dakota or meeting the enhanced Nursing Compact Licensure (eNCL) requirements is required.
